1. Walking Isn’t Ideal, But the Hiking is Spectacular

If you’re looking for a compact metropolitan area where everything is just a short walk or subway ride away, then Phoenix may not be your first choice. With over 500 square miles of land area, Phoenix is not a very walkable city, nor is the public transportation superb. While most of your daily errands here will require the use of a vehicle, there are a handful of great neighborhoods like Downtown or Governmental Mall that are more pedestrian-friendly. However, if you’re just itching to work those legs, there are plenty of options for day-hiking in the area. Strap on a pack and head up Camelback Mountain with the masses or for a quieter hike, head up Tom’s Thumb for a great view of the Valley below.

2. Expect (Almost) Perpetual Sunshine

One of the greatest things about this town is the nearly endless sunshine. On average, Phoenix only gets 20 days of rainfall annually, most of which occur during the stormy monsoon season. The rest of the year, you can expect sunny skies and warm or (scorching) temperatures. Winter temps rarely dip below freezing, and it’s not unusual to spot residents using their pools in the middle of January. Summers are notoriously hot and dry, leading many residents to escape to towns at higher elevation for some reprieve.

3. Home Ownership is a Reality

For a metropolitan area, Phoenix is one of the most affordable cities in the country. While a few things like energy bills and a gallon of gas cost a bit more than the national average, almost everything else is cheaper, including housing. The average Phoenix home price is over 7% lower than the national average, making homeownership more attainable for many people. In fact, Phoenix has far more homeowners than renters (56% versus 44%).
